Advertising in the noughties.

This is the random Tiffany window-dressing i captured as i walked past — like this, because, Chemistry.

/Noughties/: noughts, or oughts00. The (exactly 10) years that came after the millenia (2000). The 10’s (2010–2020) & 20’s (20–24, where we are now).

When i had my first job in Advertising, i figured that was a cop-out thing. From Science school — i had three scholarships in Science, and one in Tokyo for Liberal Arts (which could easily be a science bachelors if i ousted myself, and put my foot down to pedal the metal).

But, it was a pleasant surprise. A hidden gem. An unexpected oops. A non-bee sting, in the middle of a poppy field - if you will.

I am not entirely going to detail that- but this is why 2014 Apps (is all i can say).

“The Noughties” are expired 14 years ago, in our mid-twenties. But it is a good Decade, a good name, and good things happened. I am investing that in the next millennia, (which we are not going to be a part of, darkly) -but seeding all the good things about it, might bring awkward pause in case everything turns out really badly, from the planned SDGs 2030. (Again, darkly.) All my creidt and debit banks cards, say 2032. And that quite alarms me, we are at full speed ahead.

In the Noughts, things were pleasantly slower.

Advertising didn’t slow down, the pace at which we created them did. From tri-media to just the Print Ad, please, was kind of traumatic.

This caused the pivot to …. other things. There was FinTech, there was marketing. And there was FinTech Marketing, or Tech AND Marketing, and then there was Startup Marketing, and Product.

(Which was what i left in 2000.)

But for tech.

And then, there was tweeting, and digital things -which created spaces, and platforms, and this - which was a relief!

Imagine going from person to person, getting their emails, and then email to all them into oblivion? That would be gross. And insane.

So, having a proper place to read or write (medium). And then pointing them to read them at (@thenamesnotjane, @krissn on twitter) would be the perfect pairing for a straight-shoot on what you need to say, and read, without being a 2-hour session somewhere on a TED talk. THis would be the nano-précis (french for summary) of that.

So, wheels in my brain turned, and after 3 years of tweeting at events - on the side of life, created a MacbookAir-free (2014 Mavericks screen that got fixed) & the Macbook 11" (2016 Sierra) made me believe in the world again.

Conversions to creating an app for that ensued shortly afterwards….

And attempts to find both Space & Time, are an idea that I wouldn’t dare actually discover to announce as the ultimate severance pay — to a lifelong injury, as would “the shaded” would be accompanying in their surrounds. My assumptions, are always widely thrown, and finickily tested. And i wouldn’t conclued in an offshoot of bitter, clouded, bland, whiskey-less misery (which, in all brevity actually happens to all of us). It just looks worst on the ones who are beheld the most -or the front of house, or the name on the CEO charts, or the owner of organisation - whether it applied to everyone or not.

The story ends (thus far) in a zoom iPad call from the Uncommon founder, in apartment number 7 - to join in their advisory team (but them advising me), which i found a little hilarious.

Maybe, i stopped learning? Maybe, i need to un-learn to be uncommon, and learn differently to be acceptable - in a different acceptance grid perhaps? In my alarmed state-of-post-pandemic (skin) emergency, being lectured by a young Indian-Canadian CEO about the merits of my being, as an upstart to both community, and business ecosystems are - I realised, just after a Network effect, in calling my number.

Also, quite distressed to find out that they expected to ‘charge me’ with actual dollars to “join”.

Appalling.

Maybe, they needed all the “Free Advertising” and didn’t know how to Hustle an exchange?

(Would be my second guess.)
