The global COVID-19 pandemic has been largely affecting our world since 2020 and has created many implications for business operations specifically. As a result, digital transformation has been accelerating, and in many cases has been necessary not only for the future success of organizations, but also for their future survival. Here are 3 important digital transformation trends to keep an eye on in 2022.
Connected hybrid workplaces
During the pandemic, organizations were forced to shift to remote or hybrid working arrangements which gave way to a flexible work movement. With many of the biggest companies leading the way by permanently adopting this model, major discussion has been sparked about the impact on productivity. Now that teams are mainly interacting virtually and even sometimes separated by time-zones, a host of new tech is being launched to help streamline collaboration. Here are some game-changing examples of remote work tech:
Pexip — An AI-enabled video conferencing platform that can automatically arrange screen layouts and frame your image for more engaging meetings. As well, it allows you to brand the meeting room interface, integrate with a long list of tools and so much more.
Spatial — An app that allows you to create an avatar and hold VR meetings in the metaverse. It currently runs on Oculus Quest and on browser mode for other VR/AR hardware. You are able to create a custom environment or purchase an NFT environment.
OfficeTogether — A hybrid office management platform that allows you to book desks in the office, track employee COVID-19 vaccine and daily health data, and integrate with other tools.
Low-code tools for increased agility
Low-code tools allow business users with little to no coding knowledge to build applications for daily business operations. Users are now able to collaborate with IT and visually build customized applications that fit their needs, making innovation happen faster and cheaper. Despite concerns that these tools could make the role of developers obsolete, data from Appian shows they actually alleviate pressure and free up time for IT to tackle more complex issues and better manage their backlog. By “democratizing” software development, users in all areas of the business can begin making smarter, data-driven decisions without the barrier of technical expertise. - Currently 41% of non-IT employees are already involved in customizing or building tech solutions. Gartner

Sustainability through AR, AI and IoT
Governments and organizations have been committing to environmental initiatives more and more in the past decade through things like waste reduction, implementing circular economies and creating carbon neutral pledges. On top of these more traditional approaches, tech can perhaps play an even larger role in achieving sustainable business operations. Here are some examples of tech being applied to specific industries in order to drive sustainability:
The Wild & Construction — The United Nations Environment Programme reported in 2020 that construction and operation of buildings accounted for 38% of total global carbon emissions, construction alone accounting for 10%. As our global population increases and cities expand, more infrastructure will be needed to support this growth, so the construction industry will only continue to grow as well. Aside from constructing buildings with more energy efficient materials and tech, AR can help as well. The Wild is one of many new platforms being used in this space to visualize construction projects before they are built. Teams can now detect errors ahead of time and reduce energy consumption from the construction process.
Bright Machines & Manufacturing — The manufacturing industry is another huge perpetrator, accounting for 24% of total carbon emissions in 2016, as reported by Our World in Data. This figure doesn’t even include the emissions that come from other levels of the supply chain such as transportation. Bright Machines uses AI in their platform and applications to automate assembly lines within manufacturing plants. The data is monitored and continuous improvements are pushed in order to increase production efficiency. They even sell their own line of machines that are programmable and automatically connected to their platform.
Arable & Agriculture — Food production is projected to grow by 70% by 2050 and currently uses 70% of our planet’s freshwater, as reported by The World Bank. A Nature Geoscience study also revealed a pesticide pollution risk for 64% of our planet’s agricultural land. On top of this, there are emissions from farming machinery and livestock to consider in the overall environmental impact of agriculture. Arable, part of the largely growing smart farming space, provides an IoT device that measures over 40 metrics on weather, plant, soil and irrigation. The platform then turns this data into actionable insights to help with decision making and operational efficiency. This system allows farmers to optimize water levels, reduce pesticide use and monitor their sustainability impact.
