As an Account Manager at TribalScale, I’m busy every day managing client relationships and resources. I’m also the proud mom of two boys—who are 7 and 4 years old—that keep me on my toes. While achieving work/life balance as a mom is a constant challenge, I do find that I’m able to focus and bring my whole self to work. How is this possible you might ask?

In tech, motherhood can be challenging and feel like a barrier in many ways. Typically there can be long hours in a male-dominated field, where many colleagues are younger than I am. However, when I joined TribalScale 8 months ago, I knew I had found a company that was both aligned with my career goals and had a culture in place for work/life balance. Here are the important aspects of my job that have allowed me to achieve this balance:

Remote work environment

Pre-pandemic the only chance I had to work from home was if my kids were sick, and even that was lucky compared to others. With remote work I have the opportunity to be home and spend more time with my family, making it easier to manage all the responsibilities of being a mom which can be overwhelming at times.

I get to work from anywhere—my home, a coffee shop or even the library— and I no longer have to commute to work which saves me a lot of time every week.

Flexible work arrangement

Being a mom, things always come up that take you away from your work. Pre-pandemic, whenever my kids were sick I felt a little guilty for having to leave the office early to pick them up for an appointment or stay home to take care of them. Then of course the pandemic happened and many parents suddenly became full-time teachers with kids at home learning virtually while also working a full-time job.

With a flexible work arrangement, I am able to structure my day as needed. As long as I am available on Slack for my team to connect with, I can take time during the day to deal with any problems that come up.

Shutting off outside work hours

By embracing my role as a working mom, I can handle both worlds with purpose and enjoyment. During work I am able to focus on my tasks and client meetings while receiving the necessary support from my team to get things done. After work I can shut off my computer and fully focus on my family because I know that my team and company both respect my time.

I am sure all moms have heard the saying “it takes a village”, which is true. Being a mom is hard. Being a professional is hard. Doing both can feel unmanageable and the tech industry isn’t always easy to navigate as a parent. Companies should be putting in the work to build a culture that supports fellow moms and parents in general—this is an essential part of creating that village.
