If you’ve been around the block a few times, you’ll know by now that artificial intelligence (AI) is all the rage in tech these days. Despite the lack of general knowledge or awareness about artificial intelligence, it is slowly creeping into our everyday lives and becoming part of our routines. History books used to include dates and population figures with infrequency. Now, the pace of technology is speeding up, and historical events are taking place on a monthly basis — all thanks to machines learning at exponential speeds.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen AI take hold in our daily lives. The AI alarm clock Google Duplex can call up and make appointments with one simple sentence. AI can not only interpret but also write professionally written emails through email agents such as Google’s Smart Compose or AutoML where it can actually learn from your writing/emails, convert handwriting to text, and where you can see its actual neural network on your screen following the steps needed to produce real English sentences. Still, there are good uses of AI and less invasive approaches that help us retain our humanity rather than “letting machines take over”.

AI will make life easier for humans. AI takes over mundane tasks so humans can focus on more important things. For example, if you have a robot mow your lawn, you may have time for an additional part-time job to earn extra money for college. Even better is when AI completes complex tasks that humans don’t want to do such as working in an oil refinery or as a bomb disposal technician.

It will help us solve problems we don’t yet know how to solve. As the world population continues to explode, there are not enough resources to go around unless we find new ways of doing business and producing what we need.

I believe AI will save lives. Self-driving cars will help prevent accidents since 94 percent of accidents are caused by human error according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

AI will vastly improve lives through better healthcare, smarter homes, greater entertainment options and more opportunities for education. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that everything is going to be positive for us humans. In some cases the positives will outweigh the negatives, but the negatives could have a huge impact on our lives — especially those of the less fortunate.

Fun fact: This blog was written with the help of AI :)
