Keeping Company Culture Alive Online

As we approach twelve months of remote working, TribalScale reflects on how we’ve adjusted to this new work environment. One aspect that we had to significantly focus on was how to keep our company culture alive in an online setting due to COVID-19. We want to share how we are staying positive and supporting our team behind the screens.

Coffee buddies

Coffee buddies is one of our many channels our employees can join on Slack. Here’s the rundown on how it works: Donut, a Slack app, randomly pairs co-workers bi-weekly and reminds them to meet up for coffee over Zoom. This is a great way to keep our company culture alive by encouraging regular communication between people in various departments! Coffee buddies is a great way to socialize, something we usually took for granted in an office before.

Mental Health Space

On a monthly basis, we host a mental health space where time is set aside to offer our employees an optional space to get together and talk openly, honestly, and without judgment regarding their mental health. It provides a safe space to have an open discussion and get friendly, non-medical advice from friends about what works or doesn’t work, and our broad experiences in a relaxed, no pressure setting. Approximately 50% of Canadians say their mental health has been negatively affected by COVID-19. There has never been a more urgent time than now for companies to create mental health initiatives in their workplace. We hope that our mental health space reduces the stigma surrounding mental health and employees feel more comfortable getting assistance from and collaborating with each other.

Tribe Morning Standup

Every morning we start our workday with a company-wide Zoom meeting. Here is how a typical morning standup goes here at TribalScale:

  1. Company Updates: this is a time we introduce new tribe members, mention anything exciting from our social channels in Slack, opportunities to get certified, and various other things depending on the day.
  2. News: employees get a chance to talk about anything they have found interesting in the news, whether it is tech-related or not. This is a great way to spark intellectual curiosity and foster a socially aware team!
  3. Fail Fast: As our CEO Sheetal Jaitly has quoted in the past, “Failure doesn’t mean you are a failure; it just means you haven’t succeeded yet”- Robert H. Schuller. We set aside time in our meeting to talk about something you failed at the day or week before, why you failed, and what you would do differently!
  4. Kudos: Whether it be helping solve a problem or assisting someone on a project, at this time in our meeting we open the room up for Tribe members to recognize outstanding work from their co-workers.

Our morning standup is a great way to connect with the whole company, to share new findings and keep each other updated on tasks we’re working on! Overall, it is a great way to start our day and see each other face-to-screen.

Weekly Demos

Every Friday, as we approach the end of our working day, we have an event called Demos. This event was created to allow our employees the opportunity to showcase the projects they’ve been working on. They can share what the project looks like, talk about why they decided to do certain aspects of the project, difficulties that they had to overcome and so forth. It’s fun to see what other people are working on within the company, spark creativity, provide feedback and broaden employees’ knowledge.

Lunch and Learns

At TribalScale, we prioritize and value lifelong learning in order to build a well-rounded team. We offer peer-learning opportunities and have brought in external guests such as individuals from The Knowledge Society to learn about various things from Intro to Cloud Computing to Aesthetic Vs Clashing Design session, and so much more! Opportunities for development are the second most important factor in workplace happiness. We will always continue to provide employees with resources to grow and step outside their comfort zones.

Our Infinite Slack Channels

For any interest you may have, I’m sure we have a dedicated Slack channel to it! We have many professional Slack channels to discuss work, but we also have channels to connect with co-workers with the same interests. While I’m taking my break, I love sifting through our social meme channels and dog channels — the best ones in my opinion! Our many Slack channels help employees build relationships which leads to stronger communication in the workplace.
