With the release of iOS 16.4 we were given some new emojis, improvements to the HomeKit Architecture, Web Push Notifications from Safari, and updates to the Beta menus and downloads, which you can check out on my last blog here. iOS 16.5 launched on May 18th, so let’s take a dive into what we can find in this update.

Screen Recordings with Siri

iOS 16.5 boosts Siri’s capabilities for users allowing screen recordings to be started from voice. Screen recordings can now be started by activating Siri with “Hey Siri” or a long-press on the lock screen button and then saying “Start a screen recording”. You can later say “Stop the screen recording” to end the recording.

New Sports Tab in Apple News

Apple News now has a Sports tab to quickly get to stories, scores, standings and more, for the teams and leagues that you follow. This access makes it convenient for you to stay up to date on the sports teams that are of interest to you. Additionally, the My Sports score and schedule cards in Apple News will now navigate you to the game pages where you can find information on the specific game you select.

New Pride Celebration Wallpaper and Watch band

Apple has released a new Wallpaper for iPhone and Apple Watch, and a new Watch band for Pride Celebration. These are available by updating your device and changing your wallpaper to the newly created one. These were made by Apple to honor the LGBTQ+ community and culture.

Various Bug Fixes

  • An issue with Spotlight which causes it to become unresponsive.
  • Podcasts in CarPlay may not load content.
  • An issue with the Screen Time settings that may cause the settings to reset or not sync across all devices.

Conclusion

iOS 16.5 is a relatively light update compared to past updates I’ve covered. It comes with some nice improvements on the usage and capabilities of our devices and cleans up some possibly annoying issues for users. With WWDC just around the corner on June 5th, we can expect to hear more about new devices and the future of iOS 17.
