Snapchat is no longer a messaging app.
Capturing and editing a snap now takes time.
A quick and humble thought by an actual Snapchat user.
Facebook & Instagram used to be the front scene. The show. The place where magic happens. Snapchat was the private backstage, where real-life happens.
Well, just take a look. It isn’t raw content anymore.
All the features that they released in the past few months was about improving the “Stories” experience. From location-based filters, drawings, emojis shortcuts, zooms, duration, custom text, to animated selfies and more crazy gestures and undiscoverable UI that Snapchat used as the key to their word of mouth growth.
From the ‘Messaging’ backstage to the ‘Stories’ front scene.
In fact, the messaging part was totally left behind since Evan and other board members decided to focus on Public and Media content. Once again, the last Snapchat release proves us how editing & crafting your content is important.

That’s amazing, but.
I’m not sure that people, even power users, will take the time to edit a content during 20sec for only one recipient. By adding so many cool features, they are, slowly but surely, killing the 1 vs 1 messaging part.
No front scene without an audience, right?
I have seen so many people using Snapchat in my network recently. Including 30+ yo people. Snapchat is now increasing his users bases with no teen users.
Fun fact : Evan used to say that Facebook was too public for young kids, who want to share content without being seen by parents/family. Right.
But as fast a Snapchat is growing, and improving the “Stories” features, I won’t be surprised if, once again, in a few years time, parents and childrens will be using the same app…
Which might be Snapchat. ;)
