The Zero Emission Tour: An Important, Necessary Innovation for a Climate in Peril

In the five years we’ve been active, Triip has always had sustainability built in to its core products and company mission. That’s the reason why we partnered with Save Your Ocean to combat plastic waste and a key driver behind our Zero Emission Tour, the Mekong Region’s first sustainable travel experience at the Son Tra mountains in Da Nang.

We did this because it’s necessary, but the sustainable tourism feels more important now than ever before.

2019 has been billed as the year the Climate Emergency, tonally a much different term than Climate Change. This was the year that Greta Thunberg, a previously unknown Swedish teenager broke on to the world stage and is now slated to win a Nobel prize. This was the year the world was racked with demonstrations and student walkouts as the masses demanded action on environmental issues.

The foreboding tone of the term “Climate Emergency” seems fitting for what’s going on here.

Travel In Its Current Form Is Not Sustainable

But we’re a tech travel company, right? I think it’s fair to ask the big question: what does travel have to do with the state of the environment anyway?

The answer: a lot, in fact.

Consider this:

There’s a reason Ms. Thunburg arrived on U.S. soil on a boat. The way we travel now is disastrous for the environment.

Today’s Climate Emergency is a Call to Immediate Action

That’s why we created the Zero Emission Tour: a first of its kind responsible travel experience we’re debut in Da Nang at the Son Tra mountains.

This sustainable travel tour has never been tried in Vietnam — let alone the whole Mekong Region — before now. It’s a Triip experience — our local guides, our blockchain network, our community of hotels and hosts — in an eco-friendly, green tour with almost no impact to the environment.

We’re a first-of-our-kind sustainable tour conducted in an environmentally responsible manner. Our tours are conducted with respect to our surroundings with as high a sustainability element as possible, starting with our mode of transportation: all our tourists travel aboard an electric Dat Bike.

How did we do it? The centerpiece is an all electric motorbike handcrafted by Vietnamese custom builders Dat Bike. All Zero Emission Tour travelers will travel via their Weaver model, a 110cc bike that hits a top speed of 85 km/hr and can carry up to 150 kg.

It’s An Important First Step In Reimagining What Travel Can Be

The Zero Emission Tour is more than a unique, sustainable travel product.

We hope that this can be a rally cry for the world’s $8b+ travel industry, an exemplar they can look toward as they make their way in to 2020 and beyond.

2019 will be known as the year of the climate was in a state of emergency, but what if we make 2020 the year we embraced the challenge?

We’re game. And we’d love to have you along for the ride too.
