Two opposites. Both anti-heroes. Both mutants. Both are part of the X-Men Universe. Opposing personalities come together to fight a common enemy. Deadpool and Wolverine are fighting side-by-side again without corruption this time. What are we to expect when comedy meets serious? Are you ready for the team-up of the decade?

Comedic Vs. Serious Anti-Hero

These two mutant heroes, each with their own unique traits and a long and storied history share plenty of similarities but are still distinct in their own ways.

Dark humor is both gaining and losing its audience at the same time. A comedic anti-hero brings a lighter and more enjoyable touch to the violence of a movie such as Deadpool. I feel the comedic helps those who are not a fan of violence an easier time digesting the killing scenes.

Serious anti-heroes do not bring a light-hearted touch; if there is humor, it is dry, serious humor from Wolverine or lighter humor from another character.

Deadpool and Wolverine are like night and day. They are opposites in all sense of the word. Yes, they are the same in being anti-heroes, traumatic pasts, and mutants, but they are separate people who handle business differently. Deadpool is more deadly than Wolverine.

Ryan Reynold portrays Wade Wilson as a comedic anti-hero, Deadpool. He is a vicious mercenary with quick reflexes beyond regular human capabilities. The government experimented on Wade, which created a permanent deformity on his face and turned him into Deadpool.

His neurotic and dark sense of humor, coupled with his unique appearance and penchant for violence, make him a standout in the X-Men family. Unlike Wolverine, he doesn’t hide away but continues to live his mercenary lifestyle. He embraces his mutation and fights for selfish reasons.

Wolverine displays his deadly and stoic personality

Hugh Jackman portrays Logan as a serious and private anti-hero Wolverine. He is a tragic immortal anti-hero who has fought alongside the X-Men. When fighting in a war, a colonel in the army with questionable morals recruits him to a team of mutants. He left and lived in solitude until his past caught up to him, and he had to exterminate the threat of the mutants.

Wolverine has a solitary personality and fights for what is right, even if that means killing his enemy. In his origins, he hides from his mutant abilities but eventually embraces them and joins forces with the X-Men to find unity between humans and mutants. Unlike Deadpool, he initially left his mutant lifestyle to acclimate with nonmutants and pretend he is an average human. It took him a while to somewhat embrace himself and who he was. He buried himself in guilt, but Deadpool didn’t.

The original team of mutants before the creation of the X-Men

Deadpool and Wolverine are coming together to fight a common enemy. It is an expected, but at the same time unexpected, team-up. They are both a part of the X-Men Marvel Universe and have crossed paths earlier in the movie franchise. In X-Men Origins: Wolverine, we are first introduced to Wade Wilson when Stryker, a corrupted government official, unites the original team of mutants.

Deadpool and Wolverine have childhood trauma and personal demons that made them into the anti-heroes that are.

In Wolverine’s origin story, we see that he was firstly lied to about who his father was and that his biological father was a drunk, leading to him discovering his mutant powers and killing his biological father. In Deadpool, Wade says that he was molested by his uncle and lived in an abusive household in his childhood.

They both were exposed to childhood trauma, but how they handled it is different, causing their distinct personalities. Wade uses humor to cope with his trauma, causing a neurotic personality. Logan ignores it to prevent him from becoming the animal that lives in his blood, causing his solitary personality.

The characters in the Marvel Universe are connected and cross each other’s paths in their respective journeys, which makes this team-up not 100% surprising. They were once on the same team, and we got a brief insight into their opposing personalities. In the origin movie, you can see the irritation and annoyance emanating from Wolverine caused by Deadpool.

As unusual and opposed as they are in their personalities, Deadpool and Wolverine complement each other quite well. This trope has been done plenty of times before, and it turned out well and brought out more of the movie’s comedy. There are plenty of duos where one is serious and the other playful.

Iron Man and Captain America are good examples of heroes with opposing personalities who complement each other. Iron Man is the playful and jokingly hero, while Captain America is the more serious and stoic hero. Iron Man and Captain America are the light heroes, while Deadpool and Wolverine are darker anti-heroes.

Personal Thoughts

I am excited to see how this movie pans out for our two anti-heroes. I am excited to see how they will work together and how their opposing personalities will make or break their mission. Deadpool’s comedic energy brings out irritation in others, and I feel that it just adds to the comedy of the movie and the duo. Wolverine’s seriousness will give the movie flavor because he brings cut-and-dry humor. The anti-heroes will feed off each other’s energy, creating the best team.

That being said, I have doubts and fears about the production of this movie. It is known and common for a third movie of a franchise to flop. Even though a third movie flopping does not always cause the end of a franchise, it does create a dent in viewership. You can see a few examples on IMDb, Collider, and Screen Crush.

I do not understand how creators can do so well for the first two movies of a franchise, drop the ball on the third, then pick it up again for the fourth movie, and onward, if they are lucky. I like the Deadpool movies and am excited to see this team-up of opposing personalities, but I hope that the creators and producers will not make this movie a flop in the Deadpool franchise.

Are you ready for this team-up?
