TripMode on the Mac App Store
You already know TripMode for being a little useful app that helps you save & control data effortlessly on your Mac.
What you may not know is why TripMode wasn’t available on the Mac App Store. TripMode was released almost 6 years ago, after all.
So why are we on the Mac App Store now?
The reason is simple. Before macOS Big Sur came out, Apple didn’t allow network filtering apps on the Mac App Store. Sandboxing rules made it clear that apps like TripMode, that require deep integration with the system to work, were not allowed. This policy has changed since the newest Network Extensions framework was made available in Big Sur. TripMode 3 is entirely based on these Network Extensions. For users, it’s a safer way to filter your network traffic.
We also took the opportunity to offer something new, something different.
What’s different with the Mac App Store version of TripMode?
TripMode on the Mac App Store introduces subscriptions, for $14.99 per year, $4.99 per month, and Lifetime for $49.99 . This will allow you to get unlimited minor and major updates conveniently, as part of your subscription. It also allows you to use TripMode on all your Macs, including family members in your Apple Family Sharing group! We also included a free 7-day trial into it. The Lifetime option is a one-time in-app purchase, giving you unlimited updates forever.
It’s about giving you more choice
This is an additional choice that we are offering, with a lower upfront price commitment than our regular one-off licenses.
- If you like getting apps from the Mac App Store, great! This is for you.
- If you’re not into subscriptions, no worries. You can still buy TripMode directly from us. It still starts at $15. We didn’t raise the price. You will still get minor updates.
TripMode is also still on Setapp, a subscription service for Mac apps, along with +200 other Mac apps.

Hold on, do I need to subscribe to TripMode now?
No. You can keep using the regular, one-off license version of TripMode. You can buy it directly from our website, or select the Lifetime in-app purchase on the Mac App Store.
How much does the subscription cost?
$14.99 billed yearly, or $4.99 billed every month. The price and currency may vary slightly by country.
Is there a free trial?
Yes there is. On first launch, you’ll be offered 7 days for free, before the subscription kicks in. Cancel anytime.
What’s included in the subscription?
The guarantee of unlimited updates, minor and major. The ability to run TripMode on all the Macs that are logged in with your Apple account. Your Family Sharing group members can use it too, at no extra cost.
Will the direct license and subscription versions of TripMode get the same updates?
Yes, both will get the same updates at the same time.
I just bought TripMode 3. Can I get the Mac App Store version?
We can give you a refund if you bought TripMode 3 in the last 30 days. Then you just have to get TripMode 3 from the Mac App Store. You can contact our support who will help you with the refund. Beyond 30 days, it gets difficult as our payment provider won’t allow us to do refunds unfortunately. If you do make the move, make sure to delete your non-Mac App Store version of TripMode first to avoid potential conflicts.
I already have a license code for TripMode. Can I get a discounted upgrade to the Mac App Store version?
This is not possible unfortunately. The Mac App Store doesn’t provide the ability for us to offer paid upgrades to existing customers.
I would prefer to pay just once. Is there a way to do that ?
Well, we don’t offer a lifetime, purchase-once option today on the Mac App Store, sorry about that. If that’s something you feel strongly about, let us know. You can however buy TripMode 3 directly from from our website if you want.
Does it have the same features as the regular TripMode version?
Yes. All of it. Besides the subscriptions, the regular version of TripMode 3 is virtually the same as the Mac App Store version. They are both sandboxed, notarized, and use the Network Extensions framework, too. They’re both safe.
Does the Mac App Store version of TripMode work on Catalina or older?
No, sorry. We could only release the latest TripMode 3 version on the Mac App Store, which needs Big Sur to run. TripMode 2, which runs on older versions of macOS, is not allowed on the Mac App Store due to technical sandoxing reasons. You can however get the license version of TripMode 2 from our website.
Can I get a subscription if I’m not using the Mac App Store ?
TripMode 3 is also available on Setapp, the first subscription service for Mac apps. For $9.99 per month you get access to +200 curated Mac apps. If you want a subscription just for TripMode, then you need to get if from the Mac App Store.
Why not do subscriptions directly yourselves?
We know that some people prefer to get their apps from the Mac App Store. Apple reviews all apps before they get published and you get updates conveniently, for example. For us, it was also an easier way to try out subscriptions than through other platforms.
Can TripMode really filter all the traffic of my Mac?
Yes, including background Apple apps and updates. Make sure that you are running macOS Big Sur 11.2 or higher, as previous macOS versions had a bug that prevented some Apple services from being detected by TripMode or similar network filtering apps. Apple fixed it since then.
Does TripMode support Dark Mode?
We knew you’d ask. Yes it does!
Is TripMode a VPN? Do you guys track my surfing habits?
Never, ever. TripMode is not a VPN, and doesn’t use online servers to filter your traffic. Everything happens and stays on your computer.
