On the roof of Studio Ghibli Museum is a garden with a five metre tall statue from the final episode of Lupin and Castle in the Sky.

The Ghibli Museum is an interactive trip through Japan’s most famous animation studio. Home to a hands-on adventure through the world of acclaimed animator and director Hayao Miyazaki, this is a must visit for any hard-core fans.

Though for the average traveller, if you’ve ever seen or been interested in films like Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away, this is a cool and unique museum in Mitaka, just outside central Tokyo, with displays, animated never-before-seen shorts and paraphernalia galore across all Miyazaki’s work. Apparently just visiting this place is mind-altering in itself; like being inside a world of Ghibli movies, full of winding walkways, tree houses and cubbyhole doors.

Get tickets online, though be aware the ¥1000 price-tag comes with a ¥5600 service fee attached to it, making it super expensive and an exclusive fanatics-only experience. You can also buy tickets from Lawson ticket machines for the next month but you’d basically have to plan your trip around the date your ticket is issued. Not far from Tokyo, it’s worth the pilgrimage (maybe not the price) for how unique it is.
