TRISECT Art Director
Dmytri was faced with the challenge of designing in front of a live audience at Pixels of Fury Chicago. So we thought we’d pick his brain and find what makes Dmytri tick.
Inspiration is that thing that catches your eye, igniting a desire to create it your own way. -Anon.
Writing and type are unique to the individual artist — everything he or she creates comes from their unique touch. Whether it’s typography, lettering or design, the artist has a chance to create something unique and reflective of their brand.
Tell us about your last personal project. What inspired its creation?
My last personal project was for Pixels of Fury. The challenge was to create a fictional beer. As you would probably assume, designing in front of a live audience with a 20-minute time limit is no walk in the park. For inspiration, I relied on a method called, Copy | Transform | Combine: (see video at bottom of page)
- Copy: No one starts out original. We cannot create anything new until we have a solid foundation of knowledge and understanding in our line of work. Copying is how we learn.
- Transform: Taking an idea and creating variations. Major advances are usually not original ideas, but the breaking point in a long history of progress by many different individuals.
- Combine: The most dramatic results happen when various ideas are combined together. By connecting ideas together, creative leaps can be made.
The Tiger Blood beer can below, on the left was the “can plan” that I had created in preparation for the event. When scrolling through my feed, I tend to find seeds of inspiration when/where I least expect them.
What are some of your go-to websites for design & art direction?
Do you have any favorite designer(s)?
Dieter Rams is one of the smartest design philosophers. His 10-point design philosophy:
“Good design is innovative. Good design must be useful. Good design is aesthetic design. Good design makes a product understandable. Good design is honest. Good design is unobtrusive. Good design is long-lasting. Good design is consistent in every detail. Good design is environmentally friendly. Good design is as little design as possible.”
Tobias van Schneider is a Renaissance man. Currently one of the most innovative designers, his work as the Product Design Lead for the recent Spotify rebranding project was beautiful, to say the least. He is also the founder of Semsplice, which is a side project being worked on along with his contracted work.
