How to “inner-gize” an ad agency.

Ready? Go.

Sep 29, 2015 · 4 min read

In the world of advertising, we spend a lot of time expending energy — strategizing, creating, producing, moving projects through the system, and keeping clients happy… all while desperately trying to cross at least one thing off of our endless to-do list. This can be a tad bit exhausting if we aren’t taking steps to fill up our energy tanks.

So how do we refuel? How do we bring our focus back to our “inner” energy and recognize that if we aren’t continuously feeding ourselves from the inside, at some point the external energy spend is going to sputter, or worse — explode in that regrettable, over-emotional tantrum causing our co-workers to look like deer in the headlights.

Innergy Day is a quarterly event wherein Trisect has the opportunity to give a little bit back to the employees who work so hard to make every day a success. In 2015, each Innergy Day (we chose Fridays) was focused around a different theme: Balance, Fuel, Focus, and Joy.

Employees have the opportunity to participate as much or as little as they like in Innergy Day. They can choose from among mini sessions offered all day long, such as chair massage and nutrition consultations. Or participate in master classes such as Instant Calm workshop, Container Gardening How-To, and Intro to Mindfulness & Meditation led by outside vendors or in-house Trisect experts.

So what have we learned?

Employees participate in a “Fuel” Vinyasa Flow Yoga Class in June. Yes, that’s our CFO!

1. Participation Suggested

Give employees the CHOICE to participate or not. It’s been proven that individuals respond with a much more willing attitude when given a choice.

2. Make A Day Out Of It

By planning the event in advance and reserving time on employees’ calendars, everyone has a chance to consider their tasks for the week so they can plan ahead and complete the most important stuff before Innergy Day arrives.

3. Mini-sessions & Master Classes

Offer events that span the entire day, for example, 20-minute chair massages, nutrition consultations, flu shots & flu shot alternatives (pictured above) or a pop-up farm stand: we’ve found that most employees will give you 20 minutes.

We also offer two to three 1-hour long master classes including yoga, de-stressing seminars, exercise, container gardening, or desk/chair yoga.

4. In-house Experts

It’s interesting to see what the people around the office do as a hobby. It might be line dancing on a national Line Dancing squad or being passionate about the healing properties of essential oils. Asking employees to share their special talents is a great way to get participation. It inspires other employees to not only support their colleagues, but also share their own unique talents at future events.

5. Lounge Wear Highly Recommended

We take “Casual Friday” to a whole new level. When we say to wear your comfy clothes, we actually say “wear your loungewear.” We’ve seen everything from yoga clothes to warm-up pants and t-shirts.

Bonus Tips:

  1. Remember, this is a marathon. Not a sprint. We want healthy employees, not annoyed employees based on forced participation.
  2. Keep it simple. Too many events and activities happening in one day can be seen as overwhelming. Imagine ordering from the Cheesecake Factory menu: too many options = confusion and indecisiveness.
  3. Don’t stop with just the quarterly events. Create a space that employees can book to put the techniques they are learning into practice. (Check out our Innergy Room below.)
  4. Ensure leadership’s support and participation. When the President is telling employees about his new meditation practice, that enthusiasm is inherently contagious.
The Innergy Room can be booked by any employee for a quiet meditation or even a quick brainstorm. Henrik & Andi pass out adult coloring books.

That’s what we’ve learned so far. We fully expect to keep adapting and growing as the agency and culture continue to evolve.

So, what’s next?

Time to start planning our last Innergy Day of 2015 — JOY! Did someone say Puppy Room?
