Video and Slideshow: Swimming with a Glucose Monitor (Dexcom, Libre, Medtronic) with Special Tips for Open Water

Why am I wearing a Dexcom and a Libre? For swimming of course.

Someone on one of my groups suggested I make a video about my swimming set up with my CGMs. The video below includes information about how to swim with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and minimize signal loss. This is especially important to Type 1 Diabetic triathletes, competitive swimmers, and open water swimmers. I also discuss waterproofing your smartphone, receiver, or insulin pump. See my special solution for open water swimmers who want to carry minimal extra devices and always have access to your blood sugar — scan a Libre with a Sony Smartwatch 3. Slides with notes are under the video.

I don’t discuss my Garmin watch much in the video even though I show it here. You might also like my post — How to View CGM Data on a Garmin Watch or Bike Computer.

  • In case this is unclear, you CANNOT currently send data from a sensor to an Apple watch. I get this question all the time. Dexcom has talked about it for a while, but you cannot do it.

  • I didn’t really talk about the difficulty of setting up the Sony Smartwatch 3 in the video. Here’s my post with instructions. If everything goes according to plan, it’s not hard. However, I messed it up on my first try and it took a loooong time to unbrick the watch. If you are going through this process, please reach out!
