Enough

At the end of a yoga class I attended recently, we held the savasana or corpse pose for a few minutes. It’s my favorite pose. You are lying on the ground, arms at your sides, legs straight, feet flopped to a side, like a corpse. No strain or pressure or flexed muscle. Complete relaxation.

The instructor had us repeat some affirming statements. They were nice. They were positive. They were reassuring. They were powerful.

And then, she said, “Repeat, ‘I am enough.’ Well, that one was a bit tough.

In our culture of go-go-go and perform-perform-perform, it was an awkward shift for me to tell myself that I — my being and my person — alone am enough.

Yet, there you have it.

If there were no more promotions, if there were no advanced degrees, if there was never another car or house to purchase, you are enough.

There you have it. What do you make of it?

My goal is to let that awkward, counter-intuitive phrase resonate with me every day. Just be. Be kind and be curious, to quote Sam Song. Be present.

Think of the impact on your team and those around you if they sense the calm and confidence that comes from someone who knows he or she is enough. It’s something to share.
