Keys

When you leave a job, you hand in your keys. When you get a new job, you get new keys.

Where’s your workspace? Where’s the key for that? Where’s the nearest bathroom? Is there a key for that?

Let’s say for a second that these are not physical keys we are talking about -

what are the tools, ideas, relationships that you need to begin new work in a new place?

Who is that key person you need to know to order supplies efficiently?

What are the unspoken traditions in the office or space where you work?

Who feels like you need to get their permission to do something — or anything?

Who “really” makes the decisions?

Who gets offended easily — and shares their hurt with others?

Who will you end up spending the most time with — by default? By physical proximity? Who should you be spending the most time with?

Who will become your best friend in your new job?

With all the negotiations surrounding your new job, what should you pay attention to? What are the keys?

I don’t have the answers, but keep watch, be attentive, be vigilant, and know that all the keys you need are within you. You have the ability to unlock your new situation.

You are enough.
