At the end of October, Justin Taylor, head of consumer product marketing at Twitter, revealed a video showing a platform tool in development for users that would like to have NFTs as a profile picture.

The screen recording was made by Mada Aflak, senior software engineer at Twitter.

In the video, Aflak shows how users should click “Change photo” to make the switch.

As promised, here is the first experiment. Feedbacks and ideas are welcome 🙂 https://t.co/TDyhibCXfG pic.twitter.com/2ifru9T2Pa

There the user will be able to choose “Select NFT” and connect a digital wallet like Coinbase, Metamask or others.

The NFT will need to be verified. After that process is done, it’ll receive an Ethereum badge to show that it is in fact a valid NFT.

Which means, tweets posted using NFTs will also be verifiable.

Other than that, users will be able to expand the image and see further details about the NFT like: description, artist, properties, collection of origin and others.

Besides using NFTs as profile pictures, users will be able to display their collection on a tab called “Collectibles”, which will be located between “Tweets & Replies”, “Media” and “Reactions” on Twitter.

The technology isn’t really new

The news isn’t a huge surprise, given that the social media network hinted at the possibility when it allowed “Tips” in bitcoin to be sent through Lightning Network, on September 23.

However, we still don’t have a date for the new feature to be released.

According to the developer, given that the platform will only display an image, it’s unlikely that wallet information could be leaked if Twitter were to be hacked.

That’s because a connection with an Ethereum wallet wouldn’t imply the use of a private key, making it impossible to access funds and tokens, even if a data leak were to happen.

In this test phase, the collectibles tab will replace the likes tab, although it’s not certain if it’ll be permanently removed or if it’s just temporary.

It’s more likely to be temporary, given that tokens are not popular enough among users to replace a widely used tab.

This new option is still being tested, but enthusiasts show us that there are many areas in blockchain and NTFs to be explored.

Don’t stop here, stay informed on everything NFT on our blog.
