What happened that frigid November day in 1985?

Dexter Stefonek, 67, had spent his life in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. He was married to Vivian for forty-four years before she passed in 1984. Dexter’s son convinced his father to come and stay with him and his family after Vivian’s death.

For a year, Dexter stayed with his son and family in Corbett, Oregon. But in November, as it got close to the anniversary of Vivian’s passing, Dexter felt he needed to go home to Wisconsin. His son tried to get him to stay, but Dexter was dead set on going.

The morning of November 18, 1985, Dexter left out from Corbett to start the 2,000-mile trek home. Over the years, Dexter had made this drive many times to visit his son, so he knew the route and all the roads he would need to take.

Dexter told his son that he wanted to get there as quickly as possible, so he didn’t plan on staying in hotels but just sleeping in his car at rest stops.

The Last Sighting

Dexter was last seen alive in Park City, Montana. He had stopped at a gas station to fill up his Plymouth Horizon.
