Scott Lilly 30, from South Bend, Indiana. Was described by those who knew him best as, a “Civil War Buff”. The summer of 2011 Scott had decided to live out his dream. He was going to visit Civil War locations and hike the Appalachian Trail.

He was also going to use the time for self-discovery he told family and friends before heading out on June 15, 2011. He got on the Appalachian Trail in Maryland. From there he headed south. With the intention of finishing up in Springer Mountain, Georgia, later that summer.

As with most through hikers. Scott had a trail name he went by, which was Stonewall. Maybe a nod to the famous Confederate Commander, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. Who died in 1863 in Clarksburg, Virginia.

The last sighting of Scott was around the end of July. After he climbed, The Priest, a 4,063-foot mountain that the Appalachian Trail crosses. It’s located in the North West part of Amherst County, in Virginia.

August 12, 2011, a married couple set out on the Appalachian Trail in the Blue Ridge Mountains for a weekend trip. And made a horrible discovery. On a side trail leading to the Cow Head Gap shelter, they found the partially buried body of Scott Lilly. It was only a short walk from where he was last seen.
