On the night of October 5, 1989, bank president Dan Short was at home entertaining a guest until around 11 pm. His attackers would arrive a little later and take him by gunpoint to the bank.

Dan, along with his abductors, arrived around 2 am at the bank, where Dan turned off the alarm and opened the vault, where they took $70,000 in cash.

There was an additional $100,000 in cash that Dan knew about, but the robbers didn’t since it was left behind.

The robbers took out all of the security cameras. Witnesses had heard shots around 3 am.

Shortly after this, a trucker saw three vehicles following closely together, Dan’s pickup truck, a blue pickup, and a brown van.

They ditched Dan’s pickup and put him in the back fo the van. They tied him to a kitchen chair with duct tape and attached weights to the chair.

Dan was unconscious but alive when they threw the chair into the Grand Lake.
