Ruth Penelope “Penny” Bell was a 43-year-old wealthy businesswoman in Buckinghamshire, England. She ran a recruitment agency that supplied catering staff for high-profile events such as Wimbledon and the Henley Royal Regatta.

Penny lived on a £500,000 property in Denham with her second husband, Alistair Bell, a 44-year-old estate agent. The couple had a daughter, 9-year-old Lauren, and Penny had a son from a previous relationship, 11-year-old Matthew.

A well-known member of her community, no one had a bad thing to say about the hardworking and caring mother who volunteered for the Samaritans to help people.

The morning of June 6, 1991, started as usual for the Bells, even though their home was undergoing extensive renovations. Alistair left for work at 8:30 AM, and Penny oversaw the construction until 9:40 AM, at which point she told the builders she was late for an appointment in ten minutes and drove off in her pale blue Jaguar XJS.
