On the morning of September 11, 1983, a cyclist passing down the A1 carriageway in Britain happened upon a gruesome discovery when he stopped to relieve himself. The body of a woman, badly injured had been thrown haphazardly into the ditch. Though the injuries were extensive, the worst of them centered around the back of her head. The cause of the injuries was unknown but it was clear that whatever happened no one had made any attempts to cover the body from view.

It would take less than 48 hours before the identity of the deceased was known to police. The victim was 36-year-old Janice Weston. A career woman who had attained a partnership in a local law firm after moving up the ranks after getting her degree from Manchester University. After her graduation, she was offered a position in a London firm where she made the acquaintance of two men who would shape the rest of her short life.

The first man was Tony Weston, a property developer, and only one year her senior. The two became friends but initially, the relationship was simply that since Weston was already married and had two children with his current spouse. The second man was Heinz Isner. He was a wealthy merchant banker and the chairman of the Mettoy Company where Janice served as a legal advisor. He was also 40 years older than Janice.
