When Carlos disappeared in 1996, his neighbors were told that he had been hospitalized for mental illness. While he allegedly did struggle with mental illness, he certainly wasn’t hospitalized.

Carlos, whose last name remains unknown, was discovered by Spanish police in December of 2015. Police had been called to a local bar in the city of Dos Hermanas in Spain. The brother of Carlos had been drunk and creating quite a scene at the bar. Police asked if they could escort the brother him and he agreed. Once they were at his home, they noticed a dovecote with a padlock on it.

For those who don't know, because I certainly had to look it up, a dovecote is a medieval-looking structure designed to hold pigeons and doves. They typically have holes in the sides so that the birds can build nests. The dovecotes are generally attached to the sides of houses or barns.

Police spoke with the sister but they felt that she was being strange. They asked to speak with the third sibling (Carlos) to which they responded poorly. The siblings eventually let police inside the dovecote and unlocked the padlock. They escorted the police through a second door that led to stairs that took them to a loft. Another door blocked the loft but once inside, police found a very sick…
