Tantra at its foundation is all about mixing the divine and the physical. It is about bringing the wonder and expansiveness of the infinite world into our very physical day-to-day lives.

Because we tend to view the world in very physical ways — through our five senses — we try to do this through doing spiritual things. We go to church. We spend time in prayer and meditation. We burn incense. It is mixing these spiritual things into our work/play/responsibilities that make us feel like we are on a spiritual path.

But this isn’t where miracles happen.

Back in the 1950s, my dad drove tour buses in the Rocky Mountains. One day, he was heading back to the chalet with a couple of tourists on his bus, when he realized that he had no brakes. He was heading down the side of the mountain and heading for a curve that led to a one-lane bridge across a steep valley.

Realizing that there was nowhere to turn since the roads were right on the edge of the mountain, all he could do was hope and pray that there was no other bus coming from the other direction. There would be absolutely nowhere that he could go.
