Designing a better life.

When we craft a design statement, we’re saying;

Let’s create a future where humans will have a better life because of this thing we’re making.

That’s an audacious goal. It’s audacious because there’s little or no consideration of our ignorance and lack of control of the future.

With or without the previous point in mind, there’re two ways to go about designing anything;

1) Accept that nothing is in your control, adopt a prototyping culture and learn from humans you design for, as fast as possible.

2) Assume you’re the designer, the people you make for are dumb (they don’t know what they want) and you have the audacity to disrupt someone else’s way of life.

No one’s going to accept doing things the second way. We all practicing human-centered design even when we don’t know what it is.

But here’s the point of this story;

Designing interactive products mean designing behavior. If you have a goal of changing a human’s behavior, maybe you should really value the lives you disrupt.
