An Unlikely Travel Destination Made Beautiful By Its People
How Sudan warmed our hearts
If any other country was located south of Egypt, we would have gone to it. We spent just three weeks in Egypt in January 2021 and really had a terrible time. I blame the pandemic and the lack of tourism for how badly we were hassled, but I have also heard from others that it is normal in Egypt. Either way, we were desperate to get out, and the closest point of exit was the southern border, just south of where we were staying in Aswan.
Getting our visa to Sudan was easy, and so was booking and paying for our bus ride to Khartoum, the country's capital city. The actual bus trip was not for the faint of heart — it took us over 24 hours to make the 12-hour drive — but it didn’t matter.
We were ecstatic about a new adventure and couldn’t wait to get out of Egypt. We could already tell that the Sudanese on our bus were much different than their northern counterparts. They were interested in us being there but didn't want anything from us. We were greatly relieved.
