Back in the USVI for Vacation on St. Thomas
The island of St. Thomas has become a favorite winter vacation spot for relaxation
This is our third winter vacation on the Caribbean Island of St. Thomas, one of the three US Virgin Islands. The other two are St. John and St. Croix. We’ve been to St. John on our two prior trips but never to St. Croix.
Mermaid’s Chair
The United States Virgin Islands are in the Caribbean Sea, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. Last year, we hiked three miles to Mermaid’s Chair during our second visit.
Supposedly, one side of a rock formation deemed Mermaid’s Chair is the Atlantic Ocean and the other is the Caribbean Sea.
We didn’t get to walk out to the chair seen just to the left of the middle in this photo, as the tide was rising. I want to time our visit this year to be low tide so we can walk out to the “chair” to see the Atlantic on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other. There is a visible difference, apparently, in waves and currents.
Sapphire Beach
This is the beach on which we rent a condo unit. We’ve returned here three years in a row. Yes, there are other places to stay on St. Thomas and we’ve considered staying on St. John but there are reasons we come back to Sapphire Beach.
St. Thomas is mountainous. It is rare to have a place just steps from the beach. We can leave our condo and walk a few hundred yards and be on the beach — a beautiful beach with soft and and clear waters.
Many of the places you stay on St. Thomas require a long walk down to the beach. Or, they require you to drive — yes, on the left — to the beach. The convenience of being able to walk to such a beautiful…
