Ever Heard of Gdansk?

Heard of Lech Walęsa?

The only time I’ve ever heard anything about Gdansk was way back in the 80s when Lech Walęsa led his trade union at the Gdansk Shipyard, and became the leader of the Solidarity movement, which led to the end of Communist rule in Poland in 1989.

So I thought it would be a nice quiet non-touristy place to go and walk around the Old Town, not the Shipyards. I booked a hostel right in the middle of the Old Town in an attic! I’ve always wanted to live in an attic. I’m giving my knees plenty of exercise climbing the stairs.

Today I went out exploring. I didn’t have to walk far — not more than 200 metres in any direction — to find an interesting building or some delicious gelati. 🍨 I very quickly found it’s a tourist mecca which is reflected in the prices of everything — except this hostel! How lucky was I!

If you want to take a peek, here it is…

There are lots of towers which I suppose are remnants of the old city walls.
