Kylemore Abbey, Connemara Ireland
It is well worth the time to visit this castle home that has both a romantic and tragic history
We’re in Ireland for vacation. Starting in the city of Galway, we’ve been able to see many famous sights, starting with the Cliffs of Moher on our first full day, last Wednesday.
The next day, we went to Connemara County, a rural area outside the city of Galway, to the Kylemore Abbey built in the 1800s. It is now owned by the Benedictine Order of Nuns but was originally built privately by Mitchell Henry as a gift for his wife, Margaret.
I was fascinated by the wealth that it must have taken to build such a place. We were told that it took hundreds of workers five years to complete. There is an extensive, six-acre, walled Victorian garden which is where my interest was held as we oohed and ahhed over the plants, shrubbery, ponies, and formal gardens.
