TRAVEL | SANTORINI | GREECE | EARTHQUAKES
Santorini is Empty Again
Maybe this is the rest that the island so desperately needs
If you have been paying attention to the news, you will know that Santorini — one of the most popular Greek islands — has experienced more than 12,800 earthquakes since January 26th. The magnitude of all earthquakes is less than 5.3, but they have been large enough to be felt by the residents on a near-constant basis.
A State of Emergency has been called, and scientists say they have no indication of how long this may continue. The island has been evacuated, and most of the roughly 15,000 permanent residents and tourists have left and headed to Athens or other parts of Greece.
The island of Santorini is actually the upper rim of a volcano caldera. It last erupted in 1950, and while intense seismic action could indicate that the volcano is set to erupt again, most scientists (but not all) insist that this is not the case.
However, because we are currently in Montenegro and close enough that a large volcanic eruption could affect us, we are paying very close attention to this situation.
