Safari Push Notifications is Apple’s developer service that sends notifications directly to your Mac. In addition to the case of using web app notifications, it is a useful tool for organizations to send notifications directly to their computers.

These notifications are sent to users to create an interactive model of communication beyond web services and applications. They are very useful to keep users in the loop without sending spam or developing custom apps for status updates only.

Safari Push Notifications is used to send brief, clickable messages to the website users, on their Mac desktop, even when Safari isn’t running. They work just like app push notifications. They show the website icon and notification text, and the link which directs the users to the website.

History of Safari push notifications

With the App Store opening in 2008, Apple announced that it would create a centralized push notification service as a mechanism to allow apps to respond to updates and feature alerts without staying on the browser.

In 2010, Apple introduced push notifications to the Mac as an API, to support push notification. The notifications are received upon the approval of users to their devices.

In 2018, Apple began acquiring permission to send users interactive notifications upon the consent of the user which was later followed by Firefox and other browsers in 2019. Instead of bombarding the users with numerous notifications. The browser started to prompt the permission request if the users are interested to receive the relevant notifications.
