As the internet morphs in exciting and scary new directions. Sexual content is increasingly creeping onto the innocent glitter covered side of the web sphere. But with iconic platforms such as Tumblr cracking down on illicit content should we consider it a move in the right or wrong direction?

In November 2018, Apple removed the notoriously famous social media platform Tumblr from the app store. Stirring outrage and resulting in Tumblr’s crackdown on pornography within the platform. Often considered as the cooler older sibling of social media, Tumblr for the best part has remained one of the most interesting communities online, ever. Hosting a thoughtful and creative community Tumblr was a mix of high-quality visual content, formatted in a way that was easy to get lost In, with little focus on statistics, followers, and engagement. It served as a safe space for teenagers all over the globe to express themselves both creatively and sexually.

On paper, it was no shock that this total freedom was a cause for concern. Tumblr offered little to no safeguarding, especially for minors. But flaws aside, it created a somewhat safe haven for young adults to find themselves in the most digital way possible. Particularly popular within the LGBTQ community, Tumblr was a beacon of hope, a true statement of liberalism.
