The shot.

The upset.

The victory.

One of the greatest plays, shots, and games in the history of collegiate women’s hoops earns an award at the 2017 ESPYS.

Mississippi State’s Women’s Basketball team’s victory over the UConn Huskies was voted “Best Upset” over Clemson’s win over Alabama in the 2017 football national championship and Denis Istomin’s shocker over Novak Djokovic.

UConn, one of the most dominant dynasties in all of sports, entered Dallas and the Final Four riding a 111 game winning streak. Yes one-hundred and eleven consecutive wins. Mississippi State, on the other hand, defeated one-seed Baylor the previous Sunday to reach the program’s first ever Final Four.

As expected, just about everyone expected UConn to roll on easily and play for yet another national championship.

And, I mean, who could blame them?

Just last year, UConn and Mississippi State met up in the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs reached the Sweet Sixteen for just the second time in program history. UConn was expected to play for the title. The result? A 98–38 thrasing in favor for the Huskies.

The team didn’t forget about that.

Behind coach Vic Schaefer, star wing Victoria Vivians, and the heart and soul of the team Morgan William, Mississippi State had one mission in Dallas: prove they belong.

Mississippi State got off to a hot start, catching the supremely talented Huskies off guard. While UConn battled back and forced an overtime period, the Bulldogs never lost confidence.

Vivians fouled out and UConn had an opportunity to close the game out with one final possession. But, the moment never became too big for Mississippi State. All the pressure was on the dynasty. The brand of women’s college basketball. The fans filled in American Airlines Center, including Dak Prescott, were behind the Maroon and White.

And then this happened:

Congrats to our women!
