We are at a really interesting inflection point when it comes to eSIM adoption in consumer and IoT devices.

In the last two weeks alone, we have seen major product launches from Apple, Samsung and Microsoft which all include eSIM technology. Whether it’s smartwatches, smartphones, always-connected tablets or PCs: all have included eSIM support, allowing customers to simply activate their preferred mobile provider straight out of the box.

Whilst eSIM is not a new concept — it’s been around for over 10 years — what is so significant about where we are at right now is the sheer number of new use cases and products being launched that leverage benefits of eSIM. It is a little hidden piece in a big consumer electronics and IoT ecosystem. One that is powering smaller and more power-efficient connected devices and is allowing single SKU device manufacturers to ship globally, giving customers the flexibility on the best network access.

Not to mention that all this allows for 100% digital and automated connectivity activation experiences.

Prior to 2018, eSIM deployments were somewhat limited to specific and tightly controlled use cases. It was an important accessory in enabling:

  • Connected cars with a specific mobile network operator
  • Convenient travel data plans on connected tablets
  • Mobile smartwatches with a handful of supported operators

But this all changed just over a year ago when Apple and Google both unveiled their latest smartphones with support for eSIM that worked side by side with the existing removable SIM tray. This new option caught many by surprise. Very few customers knew what it was, and most network operators weren’t able to support the necessary provisioning of eSIM when these products were released.

Fast forward just one year, and there does not seem to be a major consumer product launch which doesn’t include eSIM as a standard part of a connected product. All of Apple’s products with cellular now include eSIM as standard and this is sure to be a standard feature of any further connected devices being released in 2020.

At Truphone, we have had a unique perspective on customers appetite for eSIM over the last 12 months. When some of the biggest network operators in the world were not ready for eSIM, we were the first company in the world to launch an app that would become, for many iPhone users around the world, their first real eSIM experience. Having developed and certified the necessary technology to make this happen, we have been working with mobile network operators around the world to rapidly enable them with the capability to support eSIM on the latest devices.

We are working with the fastest growing operators in Europe and around the world since late 2018 to quickly enable their network and customers with eSIM support. We continue to work closely together and with our other network operators’ partners to enable them to support the latest and greatest eSIM enabled devices on the market.

And they’re not the only ones embracing eSIM adoption. In fact, since launch, we have provisioned over 1.8 Million eSIMs in over 100 countries and with more devices and network partners, this continues to grow each and every day.
