Trusted Data Science @ Haleon

We are marking one whole year of being a new world leading Consumer Health independent company on July 18th, and to mark this milestone we’ve turned to some of our colleagues from within, and working with, the Data Science team to find out what they’ve loved about our first year, and to look ahead at what’s to come!

To do so, we asked everyone the same two questions: -

  1. What has been your Haleon highlight of the last year?
  2. What are you looking forward to in the next year at Haleon?

Sunir Gohil — Principal Data Scientist (R&D) — New Jersey, USA

What has been your Haleon highlight of the last year?

Being awarded the top 100 data influencers in the USA was my highlight as it was a great reflection of all the hard work the teams at Haleon are doing.

What are you most looking forward to in the next year at Haleon?

Making the most of new technology like Generative AI to transform the business, as a whole Haleon is excited about the opportunities AI can bring.

Chris Fenton — Data Scientist — London, UK

What has been your Haleon highlight of the last year?

A really fun social at Junkyard Gold with drinks afterwards. It was a really good opportunity to get to know people better outside of work and helped me feel closer to the team.

What are you most looking forward to in the next year at Haleon?

The full deployment of our quality risk model at one of our main factories. A huge amount of hard work has gone into this, the project is currently going through a pilot run and progressing nicely towards full deployment which will be a very satisfying moment.

Susan Voase — Change Management and Communications Director — London, UK

What has been your Haleon highlight of the last year?

There have been so many highlights. Seeing the Data Office team achieve so many recognitions from business stakeholders in response to the value that is being delivered through data solutions built and delivered by the data office has been fantastic. Seeing the team come together as a data capability and family has been amazing. Launching the Trusted Data Science @ Haleon blog, our Data Office intranet and case studies/soundbites series, and delivering out sponsorship of Women in Data have also been highs.

What are you most looking forward to in the next year at Haleon?

Building on our strong data community, foundations and capabilities to fully leverage data solutions to drive more value for stakeholders across Haleon, and further promote data capabilities across the organisation.

Kevin Song — Data Scientist — Shanghai, China

What has been your Haleon highlight of the last year?

The launch of the Meta Health webchat app is the most important event for our data team and me last year. Some functions of the app are based on AI/ML techniques such as chatbot, knowledge graph, recommendation models and user profiling.

What are you most looking forward to in the next year at Haleon?

I’m looking forward to more exciting projects since there are more and more expectations of Data Science related collaborations with business teams.

Josh Dodson — Product Owner —Sheffield, UK

What has been your Haleon highlight of the last year?

There’s been a few, from attending the DataIQ Awards in London to our live project dashboard being launched within one of our factories and site visits in Nyon and Maidenhead. I think the highlight would be flying out to Nyon and meeting the MDM Data Services team and getting a tour of the site to see how we could potentially implement initiatives we are working on within the Data Office. Now the live dashboard has launched, we can kick off further discussions with the Nyon team.

What are you most looking forward to in the next year at Haleon?

The thing I am most looking forward to this year would have to be the changes in the Data Office. First off with our new CDO, Kshitij Kumar— I think this is super exciting and will bring us a different viewpoint on how a Data Office looks/works. Secondly, changes to ways of working and moving to the Haleon standard Amplify model. This will be challenging for sure, but I think it will help us in reaching a greater standard to deliver in a timely manner and satisfaction with the stakeholders who use the Quality Supply Chain Data Products I currently work with.

Jagadish Kakhandaki — Machine Learning Engineer —Bangalore, India

What has been your Haleon highlight of the last year?

I would like to start with getting the opportunity to work with Haleon, as I joined in August 2022. I was inspired by the goal of “better everyday health” and the work being done in the AI and Data Science space here.

The team was very welcoming and I had the opportunity to connect with many intelligent minds in the team and also working with our partners. Although I had worked on Azure Cloud when I started my career, it has been a great experience to use Azure and Databricks for MLOps. I have got the opportunity to work on some great projects involving different Machine Learning and Data Science focuses.

Apart from work, got to meet the Data Office leadership team this last year when they visited the Bangalore Office. It was nice to interact with our leads and we had a great outing with them. The dynamic culture of the organisation and the local office has made the year very inspiring and fulfilling.

What are you most looking forward to in the next year at Haleon?

To continue the work and enhance my skills further to support the MLOps in Haleon. I will continue to contribute to critical projects to help the organisation achieve its goals, including Generative AI, adapting and implementing Responsible AI principles.

I would like to be an ambassador for the Data Office and Data Science in the Bangalore office, expanding my network and making new connections.

I’m looking forward to the new office space and to hopefully meeting some of my UK colleagues too!

Guzal Bulatova — Data Scientist— London, UK

What has been your Haleon highlight of the last year?

Honestly, it’s hard to pick one. We’ve had a hackathon, a coding dojo, and socials that all were a lot of fun. I really appreciated the opportunities to expand my skills and learn from the world-leading experts on forecasting, as well as mentor and guide our wonderful apprentices. If I must pick one highlight, I’d say it has been the deployment of our latest model — forecasting influenza-like illness — 6 weeks ahead for the Canadian market. Since I was closely involved in this implementation, it was extremely rewarding to see the end result of these scores on our dashboard.

What are you most looking forward to in the next year at Haleon?

I am very much looking forward to joining the Natural Language Processing (NLP) squad and working on projects in a new field, as well as meeting more colleagues in person in our new Bankside office!

Anahita Talwar — Data Scientist — London, UK

What has been your Haleon highlight of the last year?

Representing the Data Science Team in Haleon’s Women in Science Campaign! It gave me the opportunity to meet some really inspiring people across the business, get into stories of science career highs and lows as a woman, and hopefully motivate more women to explore careers in science and data. I love that Haleon championed our panel discussions and campaigns.

What are you most looking forward to in the next year at Haleon?

I’m looking forward to the opening of the new London office, as a space to foster collaboration with wider teams and, of course, treating ourselves to long lunches at Borough Market when we deserve it!

Mohsin Zafar — Data Scientist — London, UK

What has been your Haleon highlight of the last year?

One of the most remarkable highlights has been the privilege of collaborating with a diverse, brilliant, and kind group of Data Scientists and Machine Learning Engineers. Together, we embarked on exciting projects, for me, particularly focused on supply change innovations, such as real-time analytics. The stimulating environment fostered overall team growth, allowing me to expand both technical and soft skills.

What are you most looking forward to in the next year at Haleon?

I am genuinely excited about the evolution and growth of our data science team, as well as the broader data team. The possibilities that lie ahead, particularly in harnessing the power of Generative AI and enhancing our forecasting capabilities, are truly captivating. I eagerly anticipate us leveraging new technologies to drive impactful solutions in upcoming projects. The future is brimming with potential, and I am honoured to be part of the journey at Haleon.

Chee Tam — Principal Data Scientist (Customer)— London, UK

What has been your Haleon highlight of the last year?

We have successfully delivered the Repeatable Growth Model (RGM) programme and launched the Analytics Portal. This is a custom Platform as a Service (PaaS), developed and built entirely in-house. The portal is hosting a number of internally designed and developed advanced web apps that are critical to components of the project.

We’ve also successfully delivered the Matched Market Test programme, with a US team in 2022. It uses advanced analytics to identify matched test and control cells, compute the optional campaign variables and statistically compare and measure the impact of the marketing campaign.

What are you most looking forward to in the next year at Haleon?

We are growing every day, the Analytics portal has been a flexible and critical PaaS and is being used as a centralised location for several advanced web apps developed for different use cases, not limited to just one programme. We are currently working with the Quality Supply Chain organisation to develop and deploy a number of data analysis/automation tools to support our global manufacturing sites, leveraging on the portal.

We are also looking forward to delivering more Matched Market Test programmes on different products in the near future.

Thank you for joining us to celebrate the first year of Haleon, and our Data Science journey. We’re stoked to celebrate this epic moment with our awesome team members and can’t wait to see the exciting future ahead. Let the festivities begin! ✨ 🎆
