The Trusting News staff is excited to be training and leading conversations with journalists in person again!

We cannot do the work we do without the help of journalists. So whether it means saying hello to some of our longtime partners, meeting people IRL for the first time or being introduced to new potential partners, we are ready for it all.

Below is a list of where you can find us IN PERSON over the next couple of months. If you are in the area, we’d love to have you attend our trainings, pick our brains about a challenge, share something you’ve done, or just stop by and say hello.

RTDNA in Indianapolis Sept. 15–16

Join me, Lynn Walsh, at the Radio Television Digital News Association’s annual conference in Indianapolis.

I will be in the “Expert Express” area from 1:30–3:30 pm local time on Thursday, Sept. 15, and 1–3 pm on Friday, Sept. 16th.

I’ll be prepared to talk about how you can build trust with your audience and be ready to troubleshoot any challenges you’re having. I’ll also have examples of how broadcast journalists can build trust on-air and will be on the lookout for journalists who are up to the challenge of building trust with their audiences through transparency and engagement.

Send me an email if you’ll be there (Lynn@TrustingNews.org) or just stop by and say hello in the “Expert Express.”

ONA in Los Angeles Sept. 21–25

Joy Mayer, Mollie Muchna and I will all be attending and presenting at the Online News Association’s annual conference. This year it is in Los Angeles from Sept. 21 -25.

Here is a list of where you can find us and what we will be sharing:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2:30 — 4:30 pm PT // Join Joy and me for Build Your Newsroom Strategy for Connecting With Communities of Color. We’re leading this session along with American Press Institute colleagues Letrell Crittendon and Liz Worthington. Attendees will learn to assess how well they engage with communities of color using specific tools including a DEIB index, source auditing and community listening. We’ll offer a system of accountability to help your newsroom make meaningful progress (regardless of your role in the newsroom).
  • Thursday, Sept. 22, 2:30 pm PT // Join Mollie for Listening to People Who Don’t Trust You To Reach New Audiences. In this panel, participants will hear from journalists involved in projects with Trusting News where they’ve committed to prioritizing doing outreach in their communities *just* for the sake of listening and learning (a tactic we’ve heard from both journalists and the public builds goodwill and trust). Participating journalists will come away with real questions to ask and actionable tips they can use to better reach their current and aspirational audiences. Thanks to partner journalists Sabrina Sanchez of ABC10, Alexandra Smith of The 19th and Allison Shirk of the Chattanooga Times Free Press for joining Mollie on this panel.
  • Friday, September 23, 2:30–3:30 pm PT // Join me for Are You Really Covering Your Whole Community? This interactive session will explore how newsrooms can struggle with reaching sections of their communities and will offer collaborative solutions and best practices to help make sure your newsroom isn’t leaving out parts of your audience. It will take place in the Midway and is sponsored by Futuri Media.
  • Friday, September 23, 10:30–11:30 am PT // Join our whole team for Table Talks: Trust in News. We will be ready to help you navigate challenges, answer questions and share tips for building trust with your community.

Throughout the conference, the Trusting News team will also have a booth in the Midway. We hope you’ll stop by and say hello!

iMEdD Journalism Forum in Athens, Greece Oct. 5–9

Joy and I will be at the Incubator for Media Education and Development’s (iMEdD)International Journalism Week 2022 “A Matter of Trust.” The conference will take place Oct. 5–9 in Athens, Greece, at the Athens Conservatoire.

We will be leading a workshop, How Any Journalist Can Earn Trust, over three days. The workshop will help you understand common reasons for mistrust of media and gain a better understanding of what trust in news looks like around the world. It will also provide you with tips and tools to be more transparent, more engaged and more open with your users. Attendees will learn how to correct misconceptions and assumptions about journalism while building trust in their work.

It’s free to attend the conference, but registration is required. Selected sessions will be live-streamed, and live streams will be available for viewing on the event’s website. All live-streamed sessions will feature a Watch-Live Button on the Agenda page.

At Trusting News, we learn how people decide what news to trust and turn that knowledge into actionable strategies for journalists. We train and empower journalists to take responsibility for demonstrating credibility and actively earning trust through transparency and engagement. We’re co-hosted by the Reynolds Journalism Institute and the American Press Institute. Subscribe to our Trust Tips newsletter. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
