Our team has several public training opportunities coming up and thanks to Knight Foundation support, they’re free or very inexpensive.

Lynn Walsh and I (the people behind Trusting News) can’t wait to work with and train a lot of journalists this fall. Here’s where we’ll be.

Webinars

We’re launching a free webinar series through Poynter. It kicks off Aug. 21 and continues into 2020. Register here.

Half-day workshops

Our workshops teach journalists — regardless of their role in the newsroom — to understand what leads to mistrust and how to be proactive about addressing it in their own organizations. Anyone frustrated by complaints and misassumptions about journalism will walk away with strategies they can put into practice right away.

Sunday, Sept. 8, 1–5 pm // New Orleans: A four-hour workshop, hosted by the News Leaders Association, is happening the day before the NLA conference but the workshop is open to anyone. Cost is $30. Register here.

Wednesday, Sept. 11, 1–5 pm // New Orleans: The same four-hour workshop is being offered as a pre-workshop to ONA, and it is free and open to anyone, regardless of whether they attend ONA*. Register here. (*This information has been corrected.)

Conference appearances

We’ll also be presenting sessions at the following September conferences.

Saturday, Sept. 7, 2–5 pm// Excellence in Journalism // San Antonio: Lynn Walsh is running a three-hour workshop during the conference. No additional registration required. Description is here.

Monday, Sept. 9, 1:45–2:45 pm // News Leaders Association // New Orleans: I am on a panel discussing trust and media literacy. Description is here.

Thursday, Sept. 12 // ONA // New Orleans: Two sessions, designed to go hand in hand, will bring lessons from Trusting News work.

  1. The first, from 11:30 am–12:30 pm, is a masterclass for anyone looking to understand how trust is built and lost. It will address what academic research and newsroom experiences tell us about how to rebuild trust. Description is here.
  2. The second, from 2:30 –3:30 pm, is about solutions to your trust problems. Bring your challenges, and Lynn and I will address them live. We did this last year with a packed, excited crowd, and it was a blast. Description is here.

Trusting News, staffed by Joy Mayer and Lynn Walsh, is designed to demystify the issue of trust in journalism. We research how people decide what news is credible, then turn that knowledge into actionable strategies for journalists. We’re funded by the Reynolds Journalism Institute, the American Press Institute, Democracy Fund and the Knight Foundation.
