The Trusting News team is pleased to announce that we’ve received financial support from the Scripps Howard Fund. The $7,500 grant will support the creation of resources for educators who want to teach students to demonstrate credibility and actively earn trust.

Specifically, we will use the funding to create Trust Kits for educators. The kits will build on our existing set of sample assignments, which have been co-created with participants in our Trust 101 for Educators classes.

We know how time-consuming it is to create assignments and classroom modules from scratch. The Trust Kits will provide videos, assignments, slide decks and other teaching materials that instructors can then customize for their own use. The kits will make it easier for students to be introduced to the transparency and engagement strategies Trusting News has been working on since 2016. And if students learn the strategies in school, they will be more likely to take them into newsrooms as they enter the workforce.

Mike Canan, director of journalism strategies at the Scripps Howard Fund, worked with Trusting News in a previous newsroom role at WCPO. He offered this comment about supporting the work now:

“Building trust in the news and journalists is one of the most essential challenges facing the journalism industry right now. Like many aspects of journalism, it is important that the next generation of journalists learn these skills as early as possible. That’s why we are proud to support this initiative and believe the future leaders of the journalism industry — and as a byproduct, our country at large — will be better because of this program.”

About the Scripps Howard Fund

The Scripps Howard Fund is a public charity that supports philanthropic causes important to The E.W. Scripps Company (NASDAQ: SSP) and the communities it serves, with a special emphasis on journalism education, excellence in journalism and childhood literacy. At the crossroads of the classroom and the newsroom, the Fund is a leader in supporting journalism through scholarships, internships, minority recruitment and development and First Amendment causes. The Scripps Howard Awards stand as one of the industry’s top honors for outstanding journalism, and the Fund’s annual “If You Give a Child a Book …” childhood literacy campaign has distributed thousands of new books to children in need across the nation. In support of its mission to create a better-informed world, the Fund also partners with Scripps brands to create awareness of local issues and support organizations that help build thriving communities. The Scripps Howard Foundation, an affiliated organization with the Scripps Howard Fund, supports Scripps’ charitable efforts through its endowment, key projects and major donations.

At Trusting News, we learn how people decide what news to trust and turn that knowledge into actionable strategies for journalists. We train and empower journalists to take responsibility for demonstrating credibility and actively earning trust through transparency and engagement. We’re co-hosted by the Reynolds Journalism Institute and the American Press Institute. Subscribe to our Trust Tips newsletter. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
