The Big Mo
Momentum.
That elusive feeling a lot of people are chasing. Everyone wants some. But how exactly do you get it? Can you force momentum on yourself? Can you even harness it on your own?
Hopefully you aren’t reading this hoping for answers. I don’t have any. I’m just as lost, if not more, as you. I will share my recent experience though.
Maybe that will help you.
Recently I started “forcing” myself to write. Every. Single. Day. I have been setting aside one hour each day just to focus on putting pen to paper. (Yes, actual ink on actual paper. I’m weird. Let’s move on.)
So I made this challenge one week ago today. And guess what! By the end of the week I felt energized and fired up. I could feel the momentum building. Friday, I felt like I couldn’t stop the ideas and writing! It was amazing and exciting.
But then, just as quickly, it was gone. I sat down yesterday to write and nothing. The well had run dry.
So what happened? Was this the mystical writers block I hear about?
Maybe. But what if it was something in my control? Did I do anything that could have left me struggling like this?
Let’s take a look at the missing link in this story. Saturday. I did a lot of stuff Saturday. Very productive. Haircut, dog park. (For my dogs, not myself.) Watched some movies.
But no writing. Since I am in the early stages of building my creative expression, I realized I cannot afford to take a day off. The momentum I create needs to be nurtured and pushed. Once the ball gets rolling, it’s easy to keep it rolling. But leaving it unattended kills the progress. Simple physics.
