a stone’s throw

39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”
Luke 22:39–41

they were right there
just a stone’s throw away
from Jesus

as the weight of the world
was placed on His shoulders
and blood dripped from His brow
they slept heavy

after dinner with the Savior
they idled by,
in His most troubling hour
salvation within their reach,
a stone’s throw away

stones (Greg Burgess on IG)

how wonderfully tragic
to miss it by so close,
to be within reach of the Savior
while He saves our very souls

how could i be the one to miss it
our what more could i do?
i’m the one who needs the saving
i couldn’t save Him from His wounds

pray
why didn’t i pray too?
rested my weary eyes
or put my hands to the sky
what good would it do
to have interceded for you?

i could not stop the wheel from spinning,
the will of God against
all i would conjure up
in the end make me a fool

or would it build my faith?
why didn’t i pray with you?

a stone’s throw away
speculation is shamed by the truth
there was nothing we could do
to suffer for the saints
a stone’s throw away from you

if i drew my sword
or stayed heavy on my knees
you did what you were born to do
just a stone’s throw away
from my savior i am from you

are we closer now
closer now
or are we still fools?

our time spent on things
which remove us from the truth
our heads, full of lies
are we ever that close to you?

the choice could still remain
but we don’t deserve it
you’re not far off
you’ve come to save us

even when we didn’t see clearly
our eyes too heavy
to come to your aid

He is living now
closer now than any stones throw from you
you could have the choice
but He chose you

so what will you do?
stay asleep, when the hour is near?
He’s closer now than a stone’s throw
to you
