Sitting on the conference table in the offices of the Jungle Boys’ Los Angeles-based TLC Collective were large turkey bags filled with beautifully cured nuggets of weed, along with some unfinished sample boxes for upcoming strains. The company has created a cult following with their brand of meticulously curated line of products, forged from an intense trial-and-error process called “pheno-hunting.” This process can take months or even years to perfect, as the crew will grow the same plant from several hundred seeds simultaneously, in search of the absolute finest version of a strain. It’s a controlled, Darwinian process, where only the strongest survive.
“We popped around 500 seeds on this one,” Jungle Boys’ head Ivan says of a strain named Sundae Driver #12. “So just imagine 500 different phenos — as if your parents had 500 different kids — and the #12 ended up being like the Michael Jordan of the bunch. That’s how we select all of our phenos. One of them might smell good and yield well, but might not have the best bag appeal. Another might smell good, but not yield well. So that one has it all.”
Indeed it does. This unique process breeds some of the most ridiculous strains on the market, with terpene profiles that give off scents not usually attached to cannabis. I was handed a large storage bag off of the TLC conference table with “Sour Apple Kush” written in marker on the side and stuck my nose inside. I was shocked to find that it actually smelled like a sour green apple. My reaction was not unlike most others’, met with surprise and bewilderment at the scents. It’s no wonder that TLC Collective sees lines around their building each time they drop new strains on the public.
Under a new partnership with Reef Dispensaries, the Jungle Boys have teamed with Berner to expand the Exotikz line of strains, making them available in Las Vegas, NV for the first time. The strains were pheno-hunted and grown in Nevada at Reef Dispensaries’ flagship Las Vegas Strip cultivation, and will be available there in limited quantities on September 24th, 2017. With photography provided by CJ Mele and commentary by Jungle Boys’ Ivan, we took an up-close-and-personal look at the new Exotikz line of strains due at Reef later this month.
Genetics: Clementine x Purple Punch
Terpenes: Beta-Caryophyllene, Linalool
Flavor: Valencia orange, concord grape
Effects: Euphoric, focused high; Alleviates stress, elevates mood
Ivan says: “We popped a few hundred seeds on this one. It’s Clementine x Purple Punch, so imagine that amazing smell crossed with oranges and lemons. That’s why we call it Mimosa because it’s just a burst of really complex flavors. Mimosa won First Place Sativa at Chalice and first place overall. It was the number one, award winning cut this year.”
Genetics: Grape Pie x Tahoe OG
Terpenes: Myrcene, Beta-Caryophyllene, Limonene, Terpineol
Flavor: Grape jam, Diesel, Pink Peppercorn
Effects: Relaxing body high; Relieves inflammation, pain, insomnia
Ivan says: “Pie Hoe is like a really dank OG, like Tahoe OG mixed with some grapes. It’s like more of a grape, gassy OG. A heavy indica with really crazy, complex flavors. The name comes from it being a cross between Grape Pie and Tahoe. We try to always make the strain names representative of the actual cross so it gets the respect it deserves. It’s a very unique name. It sounds crazy, but that’s exactly what it is.”
Genetics: White x Wookies
Terpenes: Limonene, Myrcene, Alpha-Humulene
Flavor: Sweet mango, stone fruit with notes of hops, pepper, clove,
Effects: Treats inflammation, chronic pain, digestive disorders, stress
Ivan says: “Strawberry Shortcake was the first Exotikz strain that we ever released. It’s a heavy indica that really stood out with its strawberry, earthy flavor. A lot of rappers like Young Dolph and Berner are rapping about it now because it’s amazing. It’s one of those staple strains. When we first released it at TLC in L.A., we had a line of about 1000 people and within the first hour we had sold about 15 lbs of it, even after limiting it to a quarter per person. I remember telling everyone ‘We’re going to be fine. I know how much weed we sell in a day,’ and then I really ended up shooting myself in the foot (laughs).”
Genetics: Larry OG x Grand Daddy Purple
Terpenes: Beta-Caryophyllene, Myrcene, Limonene, Beta-Pinene
Flavor: Blue-raspberry, grape soda
Effects: Potent, soothing body high; increases mental clarity, focus
Ivan says: “It’s crazy. Purple Punch is a clone only, so we did not pheno-hunt this particular cut, but it’s still special, it’s still awesome. I look at it as one of those staple strains that will be around for a really long time, like Green Crack or Blue Dream. It’s like that on a whole different level. For anybody that’s gotten into the recreational market or that has smoked cannabis for a very long time, once you smell Purple Punch you are going to be completely blown away by it. It’s an amazing strain. It won First Place Indica at Chalice and a couple of other ones too.”
Genetics: Grape Pie x Fruity Pebbles
Terpenes: Myrcene, Beta-Caryophyllene
Flavor: Grape, Fruity Pebbles cereal
Effects: Relieves pain & anxiety; Happiness, couch lock
Ivan says: “Sundae Driver is one of our favorite ones. It has crazy, grape cereal terps — it’s just a beautiful strain. It smokes well. It’s a ten all around, it checks all of the boxes. We popped around 500 seeds on this one. It has it all.”
