…a word that can be hard to make sense of. At Tsai CITY, we see innovation as understanding and challenging existing systems to imagine what could be. That’s more than just post-its and code: innovation is a mindset and skillset that can be applied in diverse fields and contexts, from music to microbiology.

With that in mind, we asked members of our Student Advisory Board (SAB) — a group of students from across Yale’s campus, including both undergraduates and graduate students, who help shape CITY’s programs and direction — to share how they view innovation. What do they think lies at the core of innovation? How do they innovate in their own fields or daily lives?

Reflecting the SAB’s diverse backgrounds and perspectives, we got many different responses. One common theme we saw was the role of collaborating across fields and disciplines.

Students also highlighted the importance of including and supporting diverse voices in innovation, and approaching innovation with accessibility, responsibility, and a commitment to community in mind.

Another common theme was effective action and sustainable, thoughtful impact: building equitable partnerships with communities, considering consequences, and working toward meaningful progress.

Finally, students pointed out that innovation is a process — one that involves being willing to experiment and take risks, challenge conventions, and get creative.

How do you innovate? We’d love to find out. Come innovate with us.
