Big Enough

In reference to the holy spirit, Karen Baker-Fletcher writes, “A healing comes to mind. A healing big enough to hold anger and turn it into justice seeking, rather than vengeance seeking. A healing big enough to hold bitterness, transforming it into peace.” (Dancing with God, 163.)

Baker-Fletcher uses Mamie Till as an example of a modern-day Mary — a mother who holds up her son’s violent death to world and says, “Look what you’ve done.” I’d never heard of Mamie Till or her son Emmett who was lynched at 14 years old in 1955, so I started looking around. I want to share this post-acquittal confession from the murderers (which I found via this 2015 Time article commemorating the 60th anniversary of Emmett Till’s death). It’s horrifying to say the least and put Ms Till’s commitment to justice in incredible perspective.
