With a population of more than 2 million people producing 25,000 tons of non-biodegradable waste per year, sustainability is top of mind for forward-thinking Ghanians.. A budding class of retailer is growing in the country’s capital city and commerce hub who is just as committed to being green as they are to being chic. Here are our top 5 places for eco-chic finds in Accra:

1. Trashy Bags (pictured) — Using anything from billboards to ice cream wrappers, Trashy Bags makes handbags, totes, and even iPad covers from recovered plastic. The material is largely untreated, aside from cleaning making for bright, original designs with artwork that tells a story of it’s own. 2. Accra Green Market — if you can be lucky enough to be in Accra for this quarterly event you are in for a treat. Everything from organic produce to natural hair products to up and coming eco-designers can be found at this “farmers market” style showcase. Rub shoulders with Accra’s innovative social entrepreneurs and snag some gifts for friends and family that are guaranteed not to be made in China. Location varies, visit their Facebook page for dates.

3, Joelle Eyeson Designs — Eco-Chic does not have to make you look like the backpacker you know who collects odds and ends from their travels and is now somehow fashionable. It’s about a lifestyle that’s increasingly high-end. Accra based interior designer Joelle Eyeson is here to help you make the transition. You won’t have your living room with you in Accra but Eyeson offers e-consultations that not only offers design layouts and organization tips but provides you with suggestions for contemporary furnishings and home accessories made from sustainable materials. If you’re in Accra you can reach out to Joelle via her website, internationally she is listed on houzz.com.

4. Global Mamas — while everything in this shop isn’t certifiably “green” your purchases still make you feel good! Whether you are looking for jewelry, a funky top, or some luscious shea butter — Global Mamas is your place. Proudly fair-trade, the store stocks products created by local partners and has built a global enterprise beyond Accra. Visit their shop while you’re in town.
