Straight Outta Kotoka, this is the weekend the first wave of people arrive home from “outside” and get in the mix of all things #DecemberInGhana a time that holds a special place in our hearts as it’s where we got our start. Beyond events and “best of” lists, you can download the TSTMKRS app (currently in beta) on iOS or Android for some epic things to do in Accra that go beyond what you normally find when you come home. Since we’re about making sure your entire holiday is filled with memorable moments — here are our top picks for this weekend:

Friday, December 18th

OPENING NIGHT AT SABOLAI RADIO MUSIC FESTIVAL

The folks at Accra.dot.Alt are not only near and dear friends of Tastemakers but are still the leading culture house in Accra, fresh off of their biggest Chale Wote Festival to date — the team is brining Sabolai back for the second year in a row and is moving it’s talents to Jamestown. A tough time for Accra’s oldest neighborhood, the masterminds are doubling down on the importance of preserving this space by bringing yet another epic cultural event to a place many people try and avoid. This year’s lineup includes: Mani.fest, Lady Jay, Worlasi, KyeKyeku and many other soulfully radical acts of all different forms and is certainly one of the highlights of the weekend.

KICKBACK AT THE TEA BAA // Osu- Nyaniba Estates, down from Ako Adjei Park //8–10 Klannaa St, Accra, Ghana// +233 54 043 4517

It’s about to be all that and a bag of chips. We love the 90’s and know you do too! Tea Baa is throwing a 90’s kickback. Fresh grilled eats. Tea-infused cocktails. And, all your favorite 90’s jams. Before missing this, we kindly advise checking yourself to avoid wrecking yourself.

ROOF ON FIRE PARTY // Smollensky’s Rooftop, opposite Silver Star Towers // Liberation Road, Accra, Ghana // +233 24 326 1281

The Roof On Fire Party is finally back. If you attended last year, you know the deal! This time it is even better!. Free entry. Drinks pouring non-stop. DJ PAMBAM & DJ VIM TINZ killing their sets.

TWIST NIGHTCLUB FRIDAYS

Back in business just in time for the holiday season Eric and his team have opened their bigger, better outpost of Accra’s eponymous nightclub. Fresh off an Idris Elba sighting last weekend, the club is sure to be one of your go-to’s in heavy rotation as you ponder what to do in the wee hours of the moment. Prepare for the crowds (or better yet book a VIP entry with us) or be not so surprised by the long lines that still form even though they’ve expanded the location. Never fear though, once your inside, with a glass in your hand — all will be forgotten.

Saturday, December 19th

THE DAY PARTY GH

An outpost of the Accra Premium brand, the Day Party GH is an anticipated event during the holiday season. Filling a huge gap in Ghana’s day drinking scene, the event brings together locally-based socialistas and visiting homies alike. Prepare to see bottles on bottles of champagne, impeccably dressed people, and a heavy dose of air kisses throughout the day. This year’s event is being held at Burger & Relish — one of our favorite locations — and is sure to be one for the snaps.

SECRET MENU AT CHEZ CLARISSE

First we’ll pour one out for the homies who haven’t had the goodness that is Chez Clarisse Mama Africa. This somehow still hidden gem is serving up the best Ivorian food in Accra. If you’ve been already you know that tilapia, chicken, alloko, and attieke but did you know that Ivorians who come in know that there is even more noms to be had. Show up to Chez Clarisse with a voucher from the TSTMKRS app and be treated to a tasting of off menu items that will have you planning your return in no time.

#HAPPYMERRYEVERYTHING BRUNCH

Step into Midunu’s Secret Garden and have a seat at the chef’s table. Chef Selassie Adatika has crafted multi-course brunch menu fusing modern West African flavors into popular brunch favorites — think cornbread with Bissap jam and Chicken Yassa burgers. Handmade desserts, locally sourced ingredients, and an intimate crowd of dynamic people make this something you sort of can’t miss — it is a pop up after all. Brunch kicks off sharply at 11 AM so you’ll want to arrive early enough to sip your first glass of champagne (it’s unlimited for people at the chef’s table). You can gain access to a limited number of seats via the TSTMKRS app on iOS and Android.

We hope this foray into weekend guide-dom during the holidays is helpful as you plan your days back. Live a little! Get out there…so much more to do than #EatFufuAndChill.
