Women in Development: This series focuses on the inspirational Tetra Tech women that take strides to make the world a more inclusive place.
What about development work inspires you?
Challenge and responsibility: In my work, I need to be ready to step up to challenges and expect to be given tasks that are overwhelming. It’s part of the nature of the work. The problems we face are extremely challenging, and there is often no choice but to attempt to address a problem, even though the skills and resources available may not be sufficient. In every problem, we have to come up with possible solution that enhances capacity, learning, and confidence.
Working Environment: The bonds we have with our colleagues are very powerful. Being a part of the development sector, the people who share similar values and aspirations is hard to quantify, but it is a positive aspect of the job.
Experiencing different cultures: Working in cultures other than my own is fascinating and very rewarding. I find myself constantly inspired by the determination, ingenuity and resourcefulness of the people with whom I am working.
Why did you get started in international development?
The development sector parallel with my values. I am lucky that I am working in an environment where I am following my values and doing the things that I believe in. In development, we are provided opportunities to make a difference. I do believe and feel that what we are doing is contributing to making the world a better place.
Have you had to overcome any challenges to continue working in international development?
For me, the challenges have been mainly adjusting and adapting to new languages, religions, and “norms” of different countries and cultures around the world. I enjoy the challenges, though.
What has made you devote your career to international development?
In the development sector, I enjoy the opportunity to raise my voice for anything unlawful — we value and honor everyone’s opinion and we are making positive and long-lasting contributions to society.
