I’m not ready yet. It’s going to take a little while to get over the news that Peter Capaldi is leaving Doctor Who (and the loss of the War Doctor, too), but for me, the best way to get through grief is pointless speculation. Here’s who I’d like to see as Thirteen:

Simon Pegg

Is this wishful thinking? Probably. Could I also lobby for Nick Frost to be the next Companion? Might as well.

David Harewood

He already plays an alien in Supergirl, but he wouldn’t need CGI to play Thirteen. From his role as the Martian Manhunter on The CW show and Homeland, it’s easy for some Americans to forget that he’s a British actor, but this casting would be the best reminder.

Olivia Colman

She’s already worked with incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall on Broadchurch (also starring David Tennant!) and she’s the best part of practically everything she’s in. She can bring a delightful humor to a role, but 2016’s The Night Manager and Fleabag showed us that she is not to be messed with.

Michael Sheen

With Masters of Sex calling it quits after its 2016 season, the Welsh actor is free to do another series. He’s such a chameleon that Chibnall would have free reign to craft any kind of Doctor he’d like. Can I request that he keep the facial hair?

Hayley Atwell

I’m still not over Agent Carter’s cancellation. But after Conviction’s quick axing last fall, Atwell’s dance card (sniff) is open. She’s clever and warm and could bring a totally different vibe to the Doctor than Capaldi did.

Ben Whishaw

Whishaw has played a variety of roles, but he always brings a sense of thoughtfulness to his characters. As Q in the Bond movies, he’s great with gadgets, so the Sonic Screwdriver shouldn’t prove a challenge.
