In this case, the best things in life really are free. We have thousands of movies–all totally free to watch–with titles from every genre. We’ve rounded up the best free movies on Tubi TV for August 2017, including Oscar nominees, audience favorites, and critical darlings.

Joe (2014)

IMDb rating: 6.9

Rotten Tomatoes: 87%

Nicolas Cage’s recent career has been full of movies that he likely took to pay the bills, but this southern drama is a notable exception. Directed by David Gordon Green (All The Pretty Girls), Joe is moving, violent, and utterly gripping. More like this, please, Nic.

A Fistful of Dollars (1964)

IMDb rating: 8.0

Rotten Tomatoes: 98%

The combination of director Sergio Leone, star Clint Eastwood, and composter Ennio Morricone created this iconic Italian western. Followed by For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, A Fistful of Dollars is essential viewing that is never less than entertaining.

What We Did on Our Holiday (2015)

IMDb rating: 6.9

Rotten Tomatoes: 71%

Starring the 10th Doctor (aka David Tennant) and Amazing Amy (aka Rosamund Pike), this delightful British comedy is perfect summer viewing. Tennant and Pike star as a struggling married couple whose kids cause trouble on a family trip.

Winter’s Bone (2010)

IMDb rating: 7.2

Rotten Tomatoes: 94%

Awards: 4 Oscar nominations, 1 Golden Globe nomination

Before she was Katniss Everdeen, Jennifer Lawrence was the tenacious Ree in this gritty drama set in the Ozarks. She’s impossible to look away from, full of fire and the desire to keep her family safe from the dangers that surround them.

Teeth (2007)

IMDb rating: 5.4

Rotten Tomatoes: 79%

We know that the IMDb rating is a little low, but we imagine that the premise (a violent feminist response to a brutal attack) is what has turned off some viewers. But if you like your horror darkly funny and with a social bent, Teeth may be just the film for you.

Stop Making Sense (1984)

IMDb rating: 8.5

Rotten Tomatoes: 97%

Most people know late director Jonathan Demme for his work on dramas like The Silence of the Lambs and Rachel Getting Married, but he also made his mark in the world of music-driven films. This documentary about The Talking Heads was his first foray into that world, and it draws you in just as much as his narrative films do.

A Most Wanted Man (2014)

IMDb rating: 6.8

Rotten Tomatoes: 87%

Based on a novel by John Le Carré, this thoughtful thriller was the last starring role for Philip Seymour Hoffman. An immigrant in the Muslim community in Hamburg catches the eye of both German and US intelligence, but it’s unclear whether he is the victim of torture or if he is a terrorist with violence in mind. A Most Wanted Man also stars Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright, and Willem Dafoe.

Contempt (1963)

IMDb rating: 7.7

Rotten Tomatoes: 94%

Jean-Luc Godard directs this cinephile favorite starring Brigitte Bardot, Michel Piccoli, and Jack Palance. Contempt is a meta-commentary on filmmaking and Godard’s own experience, but it engages the heart as much as the mind.

The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)

IMDb rating: 6.8%

Rotten Tomatoes: 70%

This sexy thriller is a pure pleasure with zero guilt. Pierce Brosnan stars as the titular billionaire who amuses himself (and the audience) by stealing a Monet. Rene Russo is the investigator who is tasked with finding the painting. Together, they make for an on-screen couple that is full of chemistry.

You’re Next (2013)

IMDb rating: 6.5

Rotten Tomatoes: 75%

With films like The Guest and this cult horror favorite, Adam Wingard is one of the most interesting directors working today. You’re Next is a home invasion movie with plenty of surprises and genuine scares, but it never skimps on the style. We’re also fans of its unlikely heroine, played by Sharni Vinson.

Frailty (2001)

IMDb rating: 7.3

Rotten Tomatoes: 73%

Before the McConaissance, Frailty was the movie that showed us what Matthew McConaughey was capable of. This twisty thriller marked the directorial debut for Bill Paxton (who also starred), and it is an indication of his talent behind the camera and what else he might have done if he were given more time.
