We know that IMDb rating might give you pause, but hear us out: They Came Together is a smart, silly spoof on the romcom genre. If you go in expecting a Nora Ephron-esque heartwarmer, you will definitely be disappointed. Just remember that this film arrives from Wet Hot American Summer director David Wain and stars Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd (also alumni of that cult comedy), and you’ll be good to go.
You’re Next (2013)
With films like The Guest and this cult horror favorite, Adam Wingard is one of the most interesting directors working today. You’re Next is a home invasion movie with plenty of surprises and genuine scares, but it never skimps on the style. We’re also fans of its unlikely heroine, played by Sharni Vinson.
A Most Wanted Man (2014)
Based on a novel by John Le Carré, this thoughtful thriller was the last starring role for Philip Seymour Hoffman. An immigrant in the Muslim community in Hamburg catches the eye of both German and US intelligence, but it’s unclear whether he is the victim of torture or if he is a terrorist with violence in mind. A Most Wanted Man also stars Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright, and Willem Dafoe.
Saw (2004)
The epic franchise begins with this 2004 original. Saw may feature Danny Glover and Cary Elwes, but the real stars are the crazy traps invented by Leigh Whannell and James Wan. The series went on to spawn six more films (including Saw II, which you can also stream on Tubi), with Jigsaw coming later this year.
The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)
This sexy thriller is a pure pleasure with zero guilt. Pierce Brosnan stars as the titular billionaire who amuses himself (and the audience) by stealing a Monet. Rene Russo is the investigator who is tasked with finding the painting. Together, they make for an on-screen couple that is full of chemistry.
Shut Up and Play the Hits (2012)
This rock doc about LCD Soundsystem chronicles the band’s (then) final performance, and it’s at once larger than life and intimate. They’ve since gotten back together, but Shut Up and Play the Hits remains an essential film about one of this century’s essential musical acts.
Frailty (2001)
Before the McConaissance, Frailty was the movie that showed us what Matthew McConaughey was capable of. This twisty thriller marked the directorial debut for Bill Paxton (who also starred), and it is an indication of his talent behind the camera and what else he might have done if he were given more time.
The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys (2001)
This hidden gem comedy stars Emile Hirsch and Kieran Culkin as Catholic schoolboys who rebel against the strict rule of Sister Assumpta (Jodie Foster). Add in animated sequences from comic book legend Todd McFarlane and you get an innovate take on the standard coming-of-age story.
Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

Sweetness runs through this quirky indie about a man (Ryan Gosling) whose loneliness leads him to emotionally invest in a new relationship — with a life-size doll. It’s far more chaste than you’d expect with that description, and that’s part of its charm.
A Better Life (2011)
Awards: 1 Oscar nomination
Demian Bichir gives an Academy Award-nominated performance in this drama that is heartfelt in conveying its message about a father’s love.
Quartet (2013)
Awards: 1 Golden Globe nomination
Dustin Hoffman directs a cast that led by Maggie Smith for this gentle-hearted comedy. The Downton Abbey star plays a literal diva who creates drama when she moves into a home for retired musicians.
