Celebrate Ron Perlman’s Birthday With His Coolest Movie Transformations
Happy birthday to Ron Perlman! He’s beloved for his roles in blockbuster movies like Pacific Rim and shows like Sons of Anarchy, but Perlman is perhaps best known for acting roles that have required impressive amounts of elaborate, often-groundbreaking makeup and effects. Today the master of movie disguise turns 66, so we’re celebrating his iconic turns in movies like Hellboy and Star Trek.
Quest for Fire (1981)
Perlman is nearly unrecognizable as a Cro-Magnon man whose tribe sends him and his friends on a quest to find fire. The makeup was crude by today’s standards, but it set the stage for great costumed acting to come in an early role for Perlman.
The Name of the Rose (1986)
In The Name of the Rose Perlman plays a demented, disfigured hunchback named Salvatore. Things don’t exactly end well for Salvatore, but Ron’s performance is impossible to look away from.
Beauty and The Beast (1987)
Before there was Emma Watson and Dan Stevens in the 2017 remake of the Disney classic, there was good old Ron Perlman, playing opposite Linda Hamilton in the 1987 TV series. I honestly don’t know what’s more impressive: the smooth prosthetics, or the next-level hair crimping. Probably the crimping.
Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)
Ah, Star Trek: Nemesis. By this point, Perlman had solidified his reputation as the go-to actor for sci-fi and fantasy roles. He’s deliciously devious here as the Reman Viceroy under Shinzon (played by an only-slightly-more-recognizable Tom Hardy).
Hellboy (2004)
His turn as the cigar-chomping, baddie-fighting demon in the adaptation of the Hellboy comic book has defined much of Perlman’s on-screen persona, and with good reason: he was born for the role. He even reprised his live-action performance as the voice of Hellboy in the animated film: Hellboy: Sword of Storms.
